Curling Up With a Good Book

Do you have a regular routine for reading? My usual routine is to retire upstairs to my bedroom a good hour before I want to get to sleep, snuggle under the covers, and grab my book. This escape into whatever I happen to be reading at the moment provides the perfect way to wind down before nodding off. On those nights when I get home too late to read, I really feel like I missed out on one of the best parts of my day.

When I have some free time during the day (which doesn't happen often, so I take full advantage when it does occur!), my reading routine varies. On those rare occassions when I'm able to ditch everything else and simply focus on reading, I literally make a day of it.

It starts with a book I can't put down. Or a newly acquired book. Or an old favorite that I want to revisit.

This time of year, I usually begin on the couch in the living room, complete with a cozy blanket. After a while I'll move to the rocking chair (an antique from Grandma's house) in the library. Next I might move upstairs to the loft and curl up on the loveseat there.

If it's nice outside, the routine is a bit different. Then I usually start out on the front porch. Here I have several options. There's the rocking chairs, the cedar bench, or the cedar chair. After I've exhausted all of the front porch options, I head to the backyard. Out by the pond in an Adirondack is my first choice, but the patio set under a shady umbrella works fine, too.

I guess I'm a bit of a "wandering reader".

I might grab a snack or a beverage here and there along the way, and I usually stop for meals (although depending on how caught up I am in what I'm reading, this isn't always my priority!).

So, what's your favorite place to read? Do you curl up in a favorite chair? Are you a nighttime reader? Daytime? Do you make reading a regular part of your day? Anything you can't put down at the moment?

Until next time,

Happy Reading (where ever you decide to do it)!

Hi Debra! My favorite place to read is curled up on the couch in my family room with a fire blazing and a hot cup of tea in my other hand.

Most of my reading is done when I'm sitting at Mo's Music Store in Fullerton, waiting while my son takes his guitar lesson. Once he gets his license, I may lose that time. I used to read before bedtime, but I stopped that when I read a particularly disturbing scene in A Prayer for Owen Meany just before I turned out the lights.

I do get a lot of full-time reading done when I travel. And I usually read 2-3 books in the week between Christmas and New Years. This year, I read Bare Bones, Mystic River, and The Sex Club!

I read in the morning when I'm eating at the breakfast table. I read in the evening on the couch if the DH has something on the TV in the living room I don't want to watch. I read on the train when I don't have my laptop computer with or it's run out of juice. I read on break at work. Sometimes I also read books on my Iphone.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ladies! I've been trying to be good today, and get a lot done, but I'm itching to get on my couch with a book!

Hi Debra,
I'm usually a night reader. My ebookwise reader is great because I don't keep my husband awake with the light on.

I read at my desk with a notebook and pen for notes and ideas. I consider reading a part of my job.

I love to curl up on either the sofa or loveseat in my living room. I do most of my reading on weekend afternoons, but have been known to squeeze in a little bit of time whenever I can. Especially if I'm reading a 'don't want to put it down' book.

I have a recliner that I enjoy relaxing in with a book...and my dog in my lap, of course!...lol

Debra, thank you for coming by and commenting on my "kissing" post at my blog today.

Much appreciated! :)

I love curling up with a book in bed at night, but weekend mornings with a good cup of coffee are another favorite, especially if it's raining outside. :)
