Monday Musings on books & writing

A few Monday Musings on writing and books...

1. I put up a short post today on the other blog with some "fun facts" about my character Becca from GIRL Z: My Life as a Teenage Zombie

2. Deep in proofing now. Gosh, amazing the things that get missed, or misspelled, or... how doe   does that happen??

3. It takes for-ev-er to get reviews, while you sit on pins and needles, wondering, waiting...

4. It's a good thing when you can still say after X number reads of your book that you still like it - and hope others do, too. See number 3 above.

5. When did libraries become so author un-friendly unless you are Dan Brown or someone famous?

Maybe I'll think of a few more later. Or got some musings of your own?

Editing, book releases, and what else is new?

Feel like I have been sick for-ev-er..... finally I actually feel like myself again. Can't wait for spring now and flea market season soon!!

So, what is new?

 * If you didn't read it, I have a Valentine's story (or just call it a twisted love story) over at King's River Life Magazine....

* I also won a Dog Writer's Assn. Award for best mainstream magazine story! Info and a link to the story is on my nonfiction web page.

* If you're intrigued at all by zombies, several of us writers have started a blog, GirlZombieAuthors -.http://girlzombieauthors.blogspot.com/.. random postings, so come check us out!

* I am now almost through the last edits before the galley on GIRL Z: My Life as a Teenage Zombie - which I learned should be coming out around JULY 1. Yay!  Saw a preliminary cover too so that should be done soon.

Wow! After what also seemed like forever, it is now only months away to seeing the book! Wow!

Funny, how after so many reads, reading it again all these doubts rush in. But I still like the story so hope others do, too.

** So, how do you cope with an upcoming book release? Get scared still? Share your thoughts!

Imagine...

Today let's play Imagine...

Imagine:
Your book becoming a best-seller.
Your book becoming a movie.
Your book becoming a series of movies.
Your book raking in millions.
A theme park named after it.
The studio movie lot becoming a new tourist destination.
Wow.

Imagine....

Saw on TV how the Harry Potter Studio Tour is now open on the Warner Brothers lot in London.

I have to admit I never got into the books, though I did like the movies and saw several. The scope and theme of the theme park and seeing all the stuff on the movie set sounds like something that would be incredible to view in person.

** What's the one place you'd like to go or see your book turn into?

My Name is Chris and I'm A....

Yup, I confess.

I'm a bookaholic.

I realize this as I'm trying to clear out bookcases and make room for my other obsession - miniatures, also known as "too much stuff."

Every garage sale, every yard sale, every church sale, every thrift store, every mention I read online of a book, I check it out.

Sometimes, no, make that a lot of times, I buy. Hence, I now have eight plastic bags (and counting) to take to the thrift store to recycle. I do want to check first if the local homeless shelter would like some. I would so much rather take them where someone would appreciate them.

As I sort, I realize there are a lot of books that maybe looked good before, but I know won't get read. Books are like clothes, tastes change. What once looked good, no longer does. :>)

So the sporadic sort, which often feels more like moving stuff from one room to another. But at least this time some of it is moving out. Progress. On another thought as I sort - yes, maybe eBooks do have advantages after all. (My books and eBooks are on my website.)

And hey, while you roll your eyes, I dare you: make your own confession. What do you have too much of? I'm not the only semi-hoarder, er, collector, around. (Weight, wrinkles or gray hairs don't count.) Fess up.

SWAP PARTIES By Morgan Mandel

I love my husband. I lead a somewhat normal life. When I’m not working, I spend a lot of time writing, reading, watching TV and movies, going to garage and rummage sales, arts and craft fairs, neighborhood festivals. My biggest vices are playing penny slots and occasionally letting slip one of the naughty words the late George Carlin made famous.

So, why am I considering a swap party? Am I bored with the status quo?

Okay, before your jaws drop at the idea of my being one of those decadent suburban wives, I’ll let you in on a bit of news. Contrary to the old-fashioned notion of trading husbands and wives, today’s swap party is much different.

Swap parties these days are parties where people get together and swap items they don’t need or care for in exchange for items they really want. They’re kind of like interactive garage or rummage sales. The idea is to not only save money, but also to protect the environment by not cluttering up the landfills. It’s another way of going green, which is very popular lately.

As a lover of garage sales and an owner of a cluttered basement, I think swap parties are a great idea. I’m not sure if I’d like to run one myself, but I would love to go to one. Until I find one in my area, I just might try out one of those sites on the Internet for trading goods, such as http://freecycle.org or http://www.swapthing.com.

I have no idea of the reputation of these sites, but they’re among the first ones that came up when I Googled about free swapping.

You might ask, as you probably do when reading my blogs, what does any of this have to do with books and my being an author? Well, in a way I’m part of a swap party already. I offer books in exchange for reviews. Also, some of my best friends, relatives and acquaintances are already swapping my books amongst themselves and others, some even to the extent of carrying them along on vacation to different states and letting others read them poolside.

Of course, one of the biggest book swapping places is the public library, where patrons can check out books, and if they wish, donate others.

I try not to wince at the thought of all those royalties lost. Instead, I look at the positive side.

While swapping practices among an author’s relatives, friends and acquaintances or patrons taking advantage of the library system seem destructive for a career as an author, in fact the opposite is true. Word of mouth is still the best sales tool to get my brand out, and getting known is very important to me. The more buzz about my career and my books, TWO WRONGS and GIRL OF MY DREAMS, whatever the means, is good publicity and I welcome it.

So maybe one of these days I’ll participate in a modern swap party, but in the meantime until I can find one, I’ll settle for getting my books circulated and my name known.

MY TAKE ON PRINTERS ROW & A NARROW ESCAPE By MORGAN MANDEL

CATCH ACME AUTHORS LINK BLOGGERS, MORGAN MANDEL AND MARGOT JUSTES, AT AUTHORFEST THIS SAT, JUNE 14,10AM-4PM - SCHAUMBURG TOWNSHIP DISTRICT LIBRARY,SCHAUMBURG,IL - ALL INVITED!

PRINTERS ROW BOOK FEST

What I liked - Browsing the books, meeting the readers, connecting with author friends and making new ones, seeing my fellow bloggers, Margot Justes and Norm Cowie, getting a chance to sell my books, the whole ambience of the Printers Row surroundings, with the quaint little shops and restaurants and the classic clock tower at Dearborn Station.

What I didn't like, but couldn't be helped - The weather!! Very hot, with violent storms arriving at inconvenient times. Saturday I made it home before the storm set in. Sunday I just got through the revolving doors at Ogilvie Transportation Centre when I heard bam, bam, bam, bam. I thought for sure we had a tornado. The long bank of windows gave a spectacular view of torrents of rain sheeting in odd configurations. Not taking chances, I rushed to the other side of the room. I heard rain pouring and wind howling, but fortunately none of it came inside.

When all had calmed down, I ventured back to the revolving doors to find them broken, with glass scattered. No tornado, but evidently a wind of such force to break the doors. I was very thankful I'd made it in right before the glass flew. Also, no one else appeared to be injured.

What are the chances the same thing could happen next year? I'll find out, because I do plan on going back to Printers Row. I wouldn't miss it.

Now back to my new computer setup - the subject of another blog. (g)

PROMO 101 - TAKE PHOTOS & VIDEOS OF EVENTS & PUT THEM EVERYWHERE By Morgan Mandel

Below - Morgan Mandel and hubby in our Hawaiian regalia - note the turtle neck shirts underneath - It was way below zero outside! Well, we could pretend. That's what books are all about anyway.

Good friends and fans, Al & Rosemary Braun, getting into the Hawaiian spirit.

A smattering of the family and friends at the Hawaiian theme Book Launch Party for Girl of My Dreams by Morgan Mandel. More arrived later and some were camera shy.

Events are meant to be shared. When you're an author, what better place than online. Don't be afraid to include photos from important events on your blog and website, listservs file section, anywhere and everywhere you can put them. Corny, but it's true - a picture tells a thousand words. People who do or don't read both seem to be drawn to pictures. They also enjoy watching videos.

I don't yet have my videos ready, but I do have some great digital Love is Murder Con photos, Book Launch Party photos and book signing photos. They'are all important to me, so it's hard to choose which to share and when. Personally, I'll have to go with the Book Launch Party photos first, since they're closest to home in my heart.

Since one of the various locales where my romantic comedy, Girl of My Dreams, takes place is in Hawaii, I chose a Hawaiian theme for my book launch party. That was ironic in the extreme, since the below zero temperature and ultra frigid wind temperature last Sunday provided a stark contrast to the party's theme.

The day before, I and my brother decorated the room I rented from the Arlington Hts Historical Museum, with cut outs and all kinds of fun tropical stuff, like small fans, little drink umbrellas, leis. Many of the refreshments I chose had a Hawaiian connection, such as Hawaiian punch, pineapple juice, coconut cookies, macadamia nuts. I also played Hawaiian music on a karaoke machine. We all had a good time pretending and forgetting the blustery day outside. Also, I sold lots of books!

Book signings are for selling books. Book Launch parties are much more than that. They're also for sharing the good news and giving back to the family and friends who support you on your writing journey. You may spend money on refreshments and spend time putting it all together, but the memories will be worth it - also the promo ops.

All the best,

WEB PROMO 101 - LISTSERV ETIQUETTE By Morgan Mandel

Catch Morgan Mandel with fellow bloggers, Margot Justes and DL Larson at Barnes & Noble, 20600 N. Rand Road, Deer Park, IL Thursday, Feb. 7, from 7:00 - 8:30 pm.

Since the Media Frenzy panel was such a great success at Love is Murder Con, and since many questions went unanswered due to time constraints, I'll be concentrating in detail on web promotion for a bit.

One of the basic ways to get yourself a web presence is to become a member of listservs. Listservs are groups formed on the web by people of similar interests. If you do a search on yahoo or google, you can find such egroups, ie listservs, for various subjects, such as pets, politics, books, and almost anything else you can
think of.

You can also find such groups on the ning network at ning.com Some are private by invitation only, but a great many are open to the public. You click a few buttons, answer a few questions, give your preferences and you're in. Some of the preferences concern how much personal information you wish to provide, what e-mail address you wish to use and your user name. The other questions depend on the group you join.

Here are some of the options offered by the yahoo egroups:

Individual e-mails - Just what it says. You get all the e-mails posted by the members. If a group is active, be prepared to be inundated by e-mails each day.

Daily Digest - You receive one or more summary e-mails sent to you (depending on how active the group is that day) These conglomerate e-mails list the individual e-mails from the group members and divide them into categories, so that you can pick and choose which of them you wish to read.

No mail - You can choose this option if you wish to only access the messages from the website for the group, instead of having the messages e-mailed to you. Some prefer this option to keep their mailboxes uncluttered.

After you join a particular group, you'll receive a welcome message, as well as a set of rules to follow. Typically, they're not that difficult. The catch is the rules for egroups vary. It's important to keep track of them. If you don't, believe me you will hear about it by the moderator and sometimes by fellow members.

Many listservs I belong to follow a Monday promo rule, meaning if you wish to do any promotion for your book, you'll do it on a Monday, and start your subject line with the word Promo, so people will recognize it for what it is.

Some groups don't allow promo at all, some only in certain forms.

Some allow excerpts of your book, some don't. Some allow adult content as long as you warn members in the subject line. Some don't.

Whatever you do, if nothing else, follow the rules as best you can. If you join a great number of listservs and have a hard time keeping track of what you're allowed, make a list so you won't do something you shouldn't. People in these groups tend to remember it when you don't follow the rules, so follow them. After all, your purpose to be on these groups is to create a good impression and make people like you, so hopefully the other members will become interested in what you have to offer.

When you're a member, it's hard to keep up with what everyone is posting. It's a good idea to try to pick at least one e-mail you can respond to each day from a group. People like it when you congratulate them for a good review or a new book coming out. They like it when you take special interest in them. You'll like it too when people do the same for you.

These are some of the basics of listservs. The main thing is get on some, make your presence known, follow the rules, don't get overwhelmed, enjoy networking.

Now, I better go to my listservs and check my e-mails myself.

Bibliotherapy

Yes that's what I wrote - bibliotherapy!

From - HEALTH JOURNAL

Bibliotherapy:
Reading Your Way
To Mental Health
By KEVIN HELLIKER
July 31, 2007; Page D1

A growing number of therapists are recommending something surprising for depressed and anxious patients: Read a book.

The treatment is called bibliotherapy, and it is gaining force from a spate of research showing that some self-help books can measurably improve mental health. In May alone, the journal Behaviour Research and Therapy published two studies demonstrating the effectiveness of bibliotherapy in patients with depression or other mood disorders. The national health system in Britain this year is prescribing self-help books for tens of thousands of people seeking medical attention for mood disorders.

I posted this on my RWA Chapter loop with the following comment:

We just need them to endorse romance! Imagine the dosage/slogan: A romance novel a day keeps the blues away!

iPHONE COMES IN HANDY FOR ARLINGTON HTS MEMORIAL LIBRARY DISPLAY By Morgan Mandel

If I seem disjointed, I kind of am. As usual, I try to fit too much into my free day. Add to that, I had a new toy to figure out.

Yes, I fell for it. I bought an iPhone and I love it!
The learning and setting up part was the pits, but now I'm in the happy phase where I sort of know what I'm doing and am experimenting.

Anyway, a while back I had reserved a display case at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library to highlight the Chicago-North Chapter of Romance Writers of America, to which I belong.

Today was the set-up day. I had three tiers to work in - two glass shelves and the bottom wooden shelf to fill up. It took me almost two hours of moving books and photos different ways to figure out how everything should look.

When I was through, as a bonus I got to use my new toy and take photos. Lots of sunlight and glass made getting good results a challenge, but I tried different angles until I found some that worked pretty well.
It was very easy to migrate the photos to my computer. Somehow the laptop knew exactly what to do. Okay, probably the new iTunes software I was instructed to install at the beginning had something to do with it.

I also figured out how to set up my e-mail and e-mailed one of my photos to myself and it worked!

Well, I'm off now to spend a few more dollars buying iTunes----
