Books With Snow by Morgan Mandel

The DH shoveling the front walk
Snow has been very much on my mind the last few days, because of our record setting blizzard that officially began Tuesday afternoon, and seems to now be winding down, at least in my area.

My romantic suspense, Killer Career, has an episode in one of the chapters where the main characters are shoveling out a driveway and also searching for a missing dog in the snow.

Do you know of any books featuring snow, either your own, or someone else's?

My Deputy Tempe Crabtree mystery Intervention is about a blizzard trapping a bunch of movie people in a mountain lodge. It's available in all sorts of e-book formats from http://www.mundania.com

Movie people - at least they can keep themselves entertained!

My last mystery novel, Diary of Murder, begins with Dana Logan and Sarah Cafferty, two 60-year old amateur sleuths, traveling in a motorhome who are caught in a Rocky Mountain blizzard in Colorado between Denver and the Wyoming border. The same thing happened to me years ago so I was able to write about it from experience. :)

My novella, Winter Wonderland, takes place during a particularly nasty winter in Louisville, KY -- sorta like the one we're currently having. LOL! In it, former FBI agent, Dallas Powell, investigates a decades-old murder whose discovery precipitates a whole new round of murder and mayhem. Winter Wonderland is available in many electronic forms at Smashwords.com and through Amazon's Kindle store.

Evelyn David's just off the "electronic" press ebook - Undying Love in Lottawatah is set at Valentine's Day in the middle of a snow storm. Reluctant Psychic Brianna Sullivan does battle with the snow, a murderer, an incontinent elderly bulldog, and the ghost of her great aunt who needs a favor. It's book 4 of the series. At Amazon, B&N, and Smashwords.

I live where we get so little snow that snow never enters my mind when I'm writing. It would if I set the book somewhere north, though. My sister says I have thin blood since I'm always cold.

Oh my, yes. Smilla's Sense of Snow by Peter Hoeg is a terrific murder mystery that will tell you more about snow than you'd ever thought there was to know. There's also Snow Falling on Cedars and Doctor Zhivago and Call of the Wild.

None of my work features snow, and now that I live in southern NM, probably none ever will--though it's snowy here today.

I love recommending Canadian author Nadine Doolittle's ICED UNDER--it is a real jewel, I think.

One of my novels currently being considered by publishers is set in winter in the Adirondacks--snow abounds! Maybe one day I can recommend it on a thread like this :)

Perchance to dream...

In CHANUKAH GUILT, there is an early December snow storm (which really did occur on that date in 2002, when the book takes place - I try to be accurate!). It does play a role in the story, as the icy conditions make it easier for the antagonist to force Rabbi Aviva Cohen's car off the road. I enjoyed writing the following description of her newspaper at the end of her still unshoveled driveway: "I ruefully stared out the front window at my double-bagged newspaper sitting on top of the snowplow-produced mound at the end of the driveway. All I could see was an edge of the plastic bag; the rest was becoming one with the snow. How Zen of it."

My own vintage romantic mystery DARK MUSIC takes place in a blizzard-bound resort hotel in the Canadian Rockies. It holds a convention of romance writers and someone is killing the best sellers one by one.

One of my WIP has a winter/mountain scene. It makes me cold every time I read it.

I agree with Jenny about 'Iced Under'.

Another Canadian author who really hit the snow is Barbara Fradkin in 'Beautiful Lie the Dead'. That book is so snowy and blizzard-laden that I waited a month for a thaw up here in Alberta before I dived into it.
